« Tower Envy | Main | Covering For the Taxpayers » May 16, 2006Big Open-Records WinA huge win for open-records in Cocke County, Tennessee, where the local economic development commission has dropped its claim that it isn't a government agency and therefore wasn't covered by the state's open records laws. In chancery court documents filed last week, the Newport/Cocke County Economic Development Commission (EDC) conceded that it falls under the provisions of the Tennessee Open Records Law, settling a lawsuit filed against the commission more than two years ago. Now, any reporter - or any citizen journalist with a blog - can go view those records during normal business hours, without an appointment. While the case involves the EDC in one specific county, similar government agencies in Tennessee's other 94 counties will have a hard time refusing open-records requests given the legal precedent set by the Cocke County case. Economic development commissions spend millions of tax dollars to lure new industry. Now, thanks to Cocke County resident Greg Fodness, they'll have to be more open about it.
