Feel Safe Yet?

By Donna Locke
Tennesseans for Immigration Control and Reform

While Congress is in recess, President Bush has picked his crony Julie Myers, who has no actual law enforcement experience, to be Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, heading up U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). What an outrage. Here was National Review's take on Myers as nominee.

UPDATE: Here's a Washington Times story about the Myers appointment.

You've been quiet about this one, Donna:

I mean, it's not a brownie, but it is still a forner, probably trying to steal an American job or something. Never can trust'em, right?

The scary thing, at least to folks like you and me, is that people in that town are trying to get him, er, it out of jail. Can you imagine that? He's a felon! A criminal! Come here illegally!

I shudder to think about it.

By the way, Clinton picked cronies for jobs like this, too. As did the other Bush, Reagan, etc. Get over it.

Chaney, maybe you'd like to don an ICE uniform and risk your life with this laughably inexperienced woman calling the shots as your boss. A number of my associates are ICE and Border Patrol officers, putting themselves between you and what's coming across our borders. They have a right to be incensed about this appointment, and they are. Since I've been involved in these coalitions, a couple of my ICE friends have been killed in the line of duty. They stood publicly with me/our network in Georgia. One of them was chief of detention and removal for that district. They had their own immigration-control group in our coalition; they called it FURIOUS. What does that tell you? Several more of the officers I knew quit out of disgust or asked for transfers to other federal jobs. As I've said before, their government/their employer betrays them daily. I have relatives working in law enforcement, and one day you may wake up and find no decent person wants to do that job anymore for a government that plays fast and loose with their lives, not to mention gives them a job and then makes certain they can't do it -- in fact, insists on (unconstitutional) policy that puts their lives more at risk. Few things make me angrier than this treatment of our law enforcement officers, whose service is the thin line between us and utter chaos. We will not shut up about any of this, so YOU get over it. If you think you can defend this situation, start your own blog and see how many people read it. A former ICE supervisor is taking my place on a panel in Wilson County soon. He won't be mincing any words.
