« Numbered Days | Main | Santa on ICE » December 5, 2005Today's Reading ListThe War: An Army major who served in the Afghanistan theater of the War on Terror says U.S. Rep. John Murtha is "full of crap" when he claims the U.S. military is "broken" and "living hand-to-mouth." Read the whole thing. ... Also, do not miss Michael Ledeen's latest column, "Sucker's Game," in which urges America to take action against the three capitals of Islamist terror - Riyadh, Damascus and Tehran - by helping foment democratic revolutions against the tyrannies that run all three countries. He's right. And, by the way, the Saudi regime is not our friend. Ledeen: Left to their own devices, the Iranians, Saudis, and Syrians will find new stratagems, no doubt hoping to win a political victory in America even if they cannot win a terror war in the Middle East. The president cannot permit them the luxury of time. He must threaten them with the revolution of their own people, who today dominate the real Islamic street.Iran just bought $1 billion worth of surface-to-air missiles from Russia. Politics: The state Senate's ethics committee has asked the state Attorney General's office for help investigating state Sen. Jerry Cooper's use of his position to get a big state grant to enhance a piece of real estate he owned and later sold for $1.3 million, Nashville City Paper reports. For background and more on the Cooper story, click here. Also in politics today, check out StopTheACLU.com, which has a look at the new chairman of the ACLU, who comes onto the job just in time for the organization's annual "war on small towns with limited budgets" season. Blogging/New Media: The Memphis Flyer named Mike Hollihan's Half-Bakered as one of the best blogs in Memphis - and Hollihan responds in typical Half-Bakered fashion. I also like Flyer writer Jackson Baker's take on blogs: "I hate to drag Aristotle into this, but his established duopoly - that art must both amuse and instruct - definitely holds as a standard by which to measure blogs." Also in new-media news, here's a headline you wouldn't have seen a decade ago: Podcaster Falls Prey to RSS Hijacking. Posted in Today's Reading List

Iran just bought $1 billion worth of surface-to-air missiles from Russia. The IAEA just said Iran is four or five months away from getting Nukes that fact combined with this tells me they are planning for cruise missile strikes which is what these SAM's are very good at stopping I predict the next purchase by Iran in the next few weeks will be for longer range SAM's to cover the higher flight levels used by strategic bombers like the B1 and B2. Posted by: Joe at December 5, 2005 12:33 PMNo, Bill, he's NOT right; and freeing oppressed peoples is NOT the heart of the American mission. See the relevant statements of George Washington and John Quincy Adams on this subject. For a different take, with interesting links to history, see my posts The Nuclear Club and Crusade, Jihad, and Jerusalem. Posted by: Wintermute at December 5, 2005 1:29 PM"... typical Half-Bakered fashion." I'm almost afraid to ask what that means! ;-) Seriously, thanks for the mention. Posted by: mike hollihan at December 5, 2005 4:17 PMIsrael says they will not stand for Iran's nuclear program to continue and hint they may take action. In addition to the missiles Iran has purchased, they have arranged to buy rifles from Russia. Also they are in the process of purchasing ships which can be converted to mililtary uses. Also of concern is "Spain agreed Monday to sell 12 military planes and eight patrol boats to Venezuela in a $2 billion deal that the United States has threatened to block." We need to keep an eye on Venezuela's (crazy) president.
