« Clueless in Tennessee | Main | Today's Reading List » December 13, 2005Digital Camera AdviceGlenn Reynolds is hosting a "digital camera carnival" to round-up blogosphere opinion on various digital photography products. Here's my little piece of advice: If you buy Canon's digital SLR, don't get the standard lens that comes in the kit. Instead, buy the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens and make it your standard lens. I have owned a number of cameras over the years - a couple of Pentax 35mm SLRs and two Nikons, and a number of different fixed-length and zoom lenses. I have never owned a lens that I've liked more, or found more versatile, than the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens. Every single picture I've posted to my Flickr page was shot with that lens. Posted in Photoblogging

I've owned Minolta SLRs forever. The newest fanciest (Konica) Minolta digital SLR will accept all my older Minolta AF lenses. Unfortunatly, the body alone sells for nearly a kilobuck. Still saving. Posted by: "John Galt" at December 14, 2005 8:12 AM@John Galt: The K-M 5D body only is currently under $600, with a $50 rebate, if you don't need any of the advanced features of the 7D, and can deal with the couple missing knobs. I've played with one in the store and it's quite nice, though I don't think it will replace my DiMAGE A2 just yet. Posted by: Patrick O'Leary at December 14, 2005 10:15 AMThanks for the advice. The 5D looks like all I could want...plus I won't lose the use of all the glass in which I've invested. Posted by: "John Galt" at December 15, 2005 1:52 PMAgreed, that's a great lens. I got one with my D30 five years ago, and if I hadn't dropped it (ack!) I'd still be using it now on my 10D. Unfortunately it's sitting in a drawer awaiting repair. If you want to play with a faster prime lens then the 50mm 1.8 is a great place to start. Dirt cheap at less than $100 and great for the price. I upgraded to the 50 1.4 after that (I really like shooting available light) but my wife still uses the 1.8 on my old D30. Posted by: Bryan C at December 15, 2005 2:54 PMPost a comment
