« Prosperity Blogging | Main | Digital Camera Advice » December 13, 2005Clueless in TennesseeThe Tennessee Press Association - the trade association for Tennessee newspapers - has scheduled a session on blogs as part of its annual meeting coming up in Nashville in mid-February. The Press Institute and Winter Convention, sponsored by the TPA and the University of Tennessee, is Feb. 8-10 in Nashville. So, who does the TPA have doing the session on blogs - UT's Glenn Reynolds, perhaps, or maybe a certain former Tennessee newspaper reporter who is one of Nashville's leading authorities on blogs and journalism, and who happens to have extensive experience forcing stories into the mainstream media via blogs? Nah. According to the convention schedule: Electronic Media TrackJudging from the MMA Creative website, McCloud and Kopp have zero experience with blogs. I don't know McCloud, but I know Kopp. A former staffer for Al Gore Jr., when Gore was in the Senate, Kopp went on to a very successful career as a political operative and then as a member of the influential Ingram Group, a Nashville government relations firm. At MMA Creative, he's done work for several Democratic clients, including building the Tennessee Democratic Party's Go4Truth.com website. Kopp's a smart guy. If I was a Democrat seeking office, he'd be the first person I'd call. But if I was going to try to learn something about blogs and how they are impacting journalism - and will continue to challenge the mainstream media's status as a community's information gatekeeper - Kopp wouldn't be the first person I'd call. Or the 101st. ... And the dinosaurs munched the grass, only vaguely aware of the comet speeding toward them. P.S. Blogging already is a positive force. Posted in Journalism & Media

Looks like more of "how to fight blogs". The parallels between open source journalism and open source software continue... Posted by: Michael Chaney at December 13, 2005 9:20 PMAren't we at the "how podcasts, wikis, open source content management, open education curriculum archives, and semantically coordinated tagging (a la UDEF) can be a positive force" stage? Posted by: Ed_Dodds at December 14, 2005 8:33 AMhey bill...appreciate the plug on your TPA post...let me clarify a couple of things for you...among other things, mma publishes a business journal and is a member of TPA...my partner and I, as students of blogging for some time now, have been working hard to get TPA to take a closer look at the blogsphere and its huge positive impact on how people are getting their news and forming their opinions...you know I have a high profile occasionally on projects, but I keep a really low profile on most of what I do and for the past year I have been studying and engaging bloggers (ask glenn reynolds for example) on what they do and how they do what they do...mma (we don't tout this on our website yet cause we haven't had time to) has been advising corporate and political clients on blogging for some time, with great success...again, I don't have public stature on this, because I have wanted to understand it better...the event at TPA is to help our fellow publishers take a first step in better understanding blogging, in the hopes of, over time, helping mainstream media develop a better appreciation of its value...I see it, as do some publishers, but you know good and well that more education is clearly needed...but it all starts with a first step...bill I have always valued your opinions and have respected the pioneer role you play in this arena, but I hope you positively encourage that first step TPA is trying to take, and not criticize them cause they aren't running yet...best to you brother. Posted by: mike kopp at December 14, 2005 11:02 AMActually, I just saw this: Structured Blogging is a way to get more information on the web in a way that's more usable. You can enter information in this form and it'll get published on your blog like a normal entry, but it will also be published in a machine-readable format so that other services can read and understand it. Think of structured blogging as RSS for your information. Now any kind of data - events, reviews, classified ads - can be represented in your blog. http://www.structuredblogging.org/ Posted by: Ed Dodds at December 14, 2005 11:32 AMWell, that makes me feel a little better, Mike. Best of like trying to yank Tennessee's newspapers into the 21st century. Just be sure to drill into their heads that the "gatekeeper" era of journalism is over. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at December 14, 2005 11:55 AMPerhaps a part of Mr. Kopp's future work may include his discovery of the shift key on his keyboard thereby making his writing more understandable. Posted by: "John Galt" at December 15, 2005 3:18 PMOn this one issue Jefferson Starship got it right - their analogy is better than yours even if not correct according to current science. "Tyrannasourus Rex was destroyed before by furry little beasts who ran along the primeval forest floor" or words to that effect. Posted by: triticale at December 15, 2005 7:48 PMI think it's high time blogging was part of any meeting. Posted by: Helen at May 31, 2006 8:20 AMPost a comment
