« Taco Taco! | Main | Chairman Without a Cause » November 15, 2005Gimme ShelterBy Donna Locke A few years ago, not long after Sept. 11, 2001, and while I was leading the Georgia Coalition for Immigration Reform, two members of a Methodist church in Marietta, Ga., reported to me that the church's business manager, a former police officer, walked in on two Latino men whom the church's Hispanic minister had allowed to use the church's typewriters. The men had a stack of blank "Social Security" cards and were typing in information. They told the business manager they bought the cards on the street for $100. The business manager let them go and did not report this incident to law enforcement, as far as I know. I did that myself. I also gave the information, complete with names of some of the parties involved, to the editor and the publisher of that town's newspaper, the Social Security Administration, the state Homeland Security office, and a reporter for Cox News Service. The Cox reporter was the only one of the above who took it seriously. But I don't believe anything was ever reported or done about that situation. I have a stack of e-mails from people who say their own churches are being used in ways that violate immigration laws and undermine the security of this country. It's a touchy subject, but the experience I related here told me back then that the 2001 terrorist attacks made less of an impression than I had thought. Posted in Faith & Culture

It's a touchy subject, but the experience I related here told me back then that the 2001 terrorist attacks made less of an impression than I had thought. Not really. It's just that the vast majority of us understand that Mexicans and terrorism are totally unrelated subjects. Mexicans making up fake social security cards aren't going to crash airplanes into buildings. I agree that open borders are a security risk, but to extrapolate from that position to "Mexicans in the US are a security risk" is ridiculous. Posted by: Michael Chaney at November 15, 2005 5:12 PMMichael, your idea of a security risk is certainly different from mine. I know about subversive activity that I will not go into on this blog, activity captured on video and audio by law enforcement officers of my acquaintance. Illegal aliens of ANY nationality are a security risk and a threat to public safety, because they have entered our country without the background checks of the legal process. And apparently, you are unfamiliar with the huge number of OTMs ("Other Than Mexicans" in Border Patrol parlance) who are crossing our southern border, often with the help of Mexican smugglers. The following is an excerpt from an Oct. 13, 2004, Washington Times story by Bill Gertz: ". . . U.S. security officials have been concerned in recent months that al Qaeda or other terrorists are planning to enter the United States from Mexico. "Intelligence officials said a suspected al Qaeda leader who has been in the United States was spotted recently in Mexico. Officials believe Adnan Shukrijumah, whom the FBI wants for questioning, met with alien smugglers in Mexico and Honduras and was seeking ways to bring al Qaeda members into the United States. Shukrijumah was seen in August in the Sonora province of northern Mexico, officials said. . . ." That is one of many reports I could cite. What about economic terrorism these people are causing with their fake government documents. If you have a fake SS card, driver's license and who knows what else then you can run right up to the nearest government giveaway program and become a parasite on the legal residents of this country. You realize that Tumbleweed Bush authorized $3 billion to reimburse bankrupt hospitals along the border for illegals getting medical services for which U.S. citizens are turned away? If that's not economic terrorism then what is? Check out this site to see what's occurring across the country daily. Posted by: Rick Forman at November 16, 2005 12:05 AMPost a comment
