« Bridge to Nowhere Defunded | Main | Amnesty By Any Other Name » November 16, 2005Bredesen's Sweetheart DealBy Matthew White State officials insisted today that they couldn't yet put any dollar figures on the incentives they used to help lure Nissan's headquarters to Franklin. But Matthew Kisber, commissioner of economic and community development, said the incentives were "significant but reasonable," and Gov. Phil Bredesen said they were "very much down the middle."Did they know on Thursday how much the incentives were worth but, for obvious reasons didn't want to say? Or did they give the store away without counting the costs? Having Nissan in Middle Tennessee will be a good thing, but California's business climate is so bad that Tennessee should be a welcome change without $200 million in corporate welfare. To make matters worse, many of these incentives were slipped into last year's budget under cover of darkness while some legislators were doing a perp walk (or perp waltz). It's not enough to bilk taxpayers, the Governor has to do it under the table. So what is Phil Bredesen doing for the businesses that, by a large majority, provide the most jobs in the state -- ya' know, small businesses? He is setting up a website to make it easier for them to pay the money they owe the government. Give one business hundreds of millions to move to Tennessee and make small businesses pay the bills. Classic Phil Bredesen. Bob Krumm has more. Posted in Economy & Business
