« Black Caucus Update | Main | Some Interesting Facts » October 7, 2005Black Caucus At Risk of IRS Scrutiny?
The legislature's Black Caucus could be "dangerously exposed" to audits and penalties because the group had a two-decade lapse in filing disclosures with the state and failed to file at all with the Internal Revenue Service. Caucus leaders this week scrambled to organize the books under the glare of increasing scrutiny. "Whatever needs to be done will be done in the next few days," said caucus Chairman Johnny Shaw, D-Bolivar. "We are in the process of making sure everything is done."The president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research once told me it took them five months to get their 501(c)3 non-profit status approved by the IRS. Meanwhile, the Nashville City Paper today has a separate story involving legislative ethics, lobbyists and state Sen. Curtis Person, R-Memphis. Posted in Tennessee Government News

Bill, my fellow board members and I recently made application to the IRS for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. And, we got our approval back in just twenty-something days. Perhaps it has something to do with the type of nonprofit that is being considered. But, ours took nowhere near as long as your friend's. Sincerely, Post a comment
