« Nuts! | Main | Waltzing Away » September 30, 2005Memo to RustyRusty, with the email address Flack for Harold Ford Jr. and the Tennessee Democratic Party someplace else. Or, if you're so desperate to reach my readers, buy an ad. Thank you. Comments
Bill Ol' boy, its not like you put my postings on your site anyway. you have my email address, if you thought my little ol' opinions were such a threat, you could have emailed me, but since you posted your memo, I hope you'll let this one stand. Let's be straight, I'm only putting forth those uncomfortable doses of reality. If they disagree with you, just keep hitting the delete button. I won't whine about freedom of speech -- its your blog right or wrong. But please, don't whine that it is too much work for you delete the occassional uncomfortable dose of reality I dish up. Smiles Billy, smiles. If you don't want responses, leave the blogosphere and just post your opinion only. Otherwise, keep working your delete button. Posted by: Rusty at September 30, 2005 5:34 PMWell, of course, contrary to the implication of your comment, Rusty, I don't delete comments just because I don't agree with them. I have more than 10,000 comments now published on this site and thousands of them are from liberals/Democrats and others who take issue with what I wrote. The only such comments that I've ever deleted were comments that used egregiously foul language or engaged in vicious personal attack. Read the comments policy - it's right up there in red text. It's pretty self-explanatory. It says "Your comment is subject to deletion if it is off-topic or includes foul language or personal attack." Perhaps you didn' t understand what that means, so let me put in the simplest of terms: Your comment is subject to deletion if it is off-topic or includes foul language or personal attack. Hence your comments were deleted because they had nothing - nada, zip, zilch - to do with the subject of the post you were "commenting" on. Instead, you were trying to use my blog as your personal soapbox to write about Tom DeLay, to flack for Harold Ford Jr., or to push whatever other issues and agendas you felt like you needed to write about. And you did so on posts that had nothing to do with the subject you were writing about. Of course I want readers' responses - I have written often about how the interactive nature of blogged journalism and blogged commentary is far superior to the top-down model of the traditional print/broadcast news media. But a comment is only a "response" if it addresses the subject of the post it is posted under. That concept apparently was too difficult for you to grasp. Yeah, life's tough here in the reality-based world, Rusty, but you're welcome to stick around and keep trying to get the hang of it. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at September 30, 2005 5:59 PMWell clearly, Hobb ol' boy, we can be blogging pals, but we have to disagree about what is relevant. To that end, I took a brave step and followed your advice (don't think you're all bad) and got a blog o' my own. No "flakking" as you put it (I still can't figure out what I wrote that gave you the idea I was less cynical about anyone candidate), just uncomfortable doses of reality. Now, I don't know that anyone will want to read what I'm writing their, but I'll give it a go. Have no fear Hobbs my blogosphere colleague, I will still come 'round once in a while if you aren't dispensing the call-them-on-the-table posts equally. So here we go... No need to do any flacking for Junior. He seems to be doing a pretty good job of it for himself in NYC. Posted by: Blake at October 1, 2005 12:20 AMRusty is apparently from the school of "Make Money FAST!!!" blog promotion. He's pulled the same stunt at Bob Krumm's and Sharon Cobb's places, too. Posted by: Katherine Coble at October 1, 2005 9:48 AMClearly Bill, Jay, etc. are all working on the same page. When I first came to the blogosphere they basehed me for days about my rules regarding posting. Now, within the past two weeks, both Bill and Jay have been caught deleting posts in which they say "violate" their rules by not being on topic. When I confronted Jay by saying it was hypocritical of him, he said, "If that's hypocritical, fine. As far as I'm concerned, most of your comments are just annoying spam." It seems to me they can sense that the Harold Ford Jr. net support has been growing of late, and are doing all they can to supress it. But guess what, it's not-a-gonna happen! Cheers! Chris Posted by: Chris D. Jackson at October 1, 2005 5:52 PMChris said: Now, within the past two weeks, both Bill and Jay have been caught deleting posts in which they say "violate" their rules by not being on topic. When I confronted Jay by saying it was hypocritical of him, he said, "If that's hypocritical, fine. As far as I'm concerned, most of your comments are just annoying spam." Caught? I was caught? By whom? The Blogosphere Comments Police? Yeah. Apparently I was unaware that I don't own my blog and am not allowed to enfore my "stay on topic" rule for comments. Chris, grow up. Rusty was spamming a number of blogs with the same comments, which were invariably off-topic. He was trying to use my blog to publish about what he wanted to talk about - but my blog is, primarily, intended to be about what I want to talk about. Rusty is welcome to post comments on my blog that disagree with me, that boost Harold Ford Jr., talk up the Democratic agenda, whatever. But he has to follow the rules, just as every other commenter does. I've deleted fewer than 100 comments (not including porn/gambling/drugs spam) in the nearly four years I have been blogging. I have published more than 10,000. I'd estimate at least 4,000 of those have been posts from Democrats. But they followed the rules - and stayed on-topic. Rusty was spamming blogs with comments that had nothing to do with the posts he was commenting on. I could have quietly deleted them, but I felt he needed be taught a lesson in blogging etiquette - which is, don't steal others' bandwidth and server space in order to publish your message. Rusty was a guest on my comments board, and he chose to be rude and disregard house rules that he knew to be the rules. I haven't banned him, but will delete any comments from Left or Right that are off-topic. Oh, and Jay and I aren't "working on the same page." I barely know him and have never talked to him about what we're going to blog about. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at October 1, 2005 9:23 PMWhat was the "lesson in blogger etiquette?" Blogger etiquette that you apparently don't understand yet is that you don't steal someone else's blog space for your own purposes. When you use the comments feature of anyone's blog to write about things that interest you but aren't the subject of the post you're "commenting" on, you are stealing their bandwidth and server space and being rude. Simple as that. Posted by: Bill Hobbs at October 2, 2005 1:14 PMUse the bully pulpit to your advantage Bill. You've already wasted more time and given more attention to a troll than they could have ever achieved by their own talents. And where can I get a pair of those official Harold Ford, Jr. kneepads that all the kids are wearing? They must be comfortable. Posted by: smantix at October 3, 2005 2:57 PM'kneepads'... lol.
