Ethics Update

Here's the latest on the investigation - or, rather, the non-investigation - into state Sen. Jerry Cooper's use of his elected position to get a state grant to fund a rail spur to a piece of real estate he owned so he could sell it for $1.3 million. The deal has already resulted in three people being indicted. And now Lt. Gov. John Wilder admits he was involved in his bank loaning money to the buyers.

Lt. Gov. John Wilder acknowledged yesterday that he played a role in a $1.77 million loan from a bank he co-owns to an Alabama couple who now stand under federal indictment. Wilder's bank lost money on the deal. But his role in the transaction raised questions, especially after he involved himself in secret meetings yesterday with members of the Senate Ethics Committee who were considering an investigation.

Wilder met briefly with key members of the Senate Ethics Committee just before they were to decide whether to investigate Sen. Jerry Cooper, D-Morrison, who helped obtain the loan so the couple could buy his lumber mill in Smartt, Tenn. After meeting with Wilder, the panel decided to investigate neither Cooper nor the loan deal.
Wilder will be presiding of the Senate when it takes up ethics legislation in the next regular or special session.Phil Williams of NewsChannel5, who first reported the shady deal involving Cooper, exposes the secret meeting where members of the Senate ethics committee decided not to investigate Cooper further. Committee members say they lack key documents, but Williams found those documents - in state files. The video of that story is also on the NewsChannel5 website as of now. If you have a chance to watch it, do - and ask yourself how long Tennessee can stand to allow a corrupt, doddering fool like Wilder remain the leader of the state Senate, not to mention first in line to step in if something happens to the governor.

Comments

I am speechless, yet I have to post a comment anyway. I try to remain calm in my ongoing analysis of our government and its effectiveness (or lack thereof), but stories like this bring me nigh to apoplexy.

Thanks for posting this, Bill. I hope we bloggers and any other responsible media can help engineer an outright rebuilding of just about the entire General Assembly, via next year's elections. Yes, there are some incumbents who deserve to be their constituents' representatives, but there are far too many who do not. No, at this point I do not care which party label ends up with a majority in either house, as long as the members are above reproach.
