Davis Vulnerable? Probably Not

Roll Call wonders if U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis, the two-term Democrat from Tennessee's fourth congressional district, might be vulnerable to a Republican challenge next year. The article is for Roll Call subscribers only. I've read it and the gist of it is that Tennessee as a whole is trending more Republican, and President Bush won in the fourth district in 2004 by a wide margin - and Davis voted for the ultra-liberal Nancy Pelosi for House Democratic Leader, which won't "sit well" with the district's conservatives.

I'm not entirely convinced. Until voters of the fourth district see a disconnect between Davis's God-and-guns conservative rhetoric and his DC voting record, he's going to be difficult to beat.

Of course, Davis most certainly ought to face a well-funded GOP challenger, just in case I'm wrong.

The previous congressman from the fourth district, Van Hilleary, could beat Davis, but Hilleary's living in the sixth district now and, though he is raising funds for a Senate run, is rumored to be either considering or being encouraged to consider running against the sixth district's Democratic incumbent, Rep. Bart Gordon - as the sixth district also is trending more Republican these days.

As long as Davis tells everyone he is anti-abortion, he will keep getting re-elected. Too many one-issue voters will not care that he's got a lot of problems with his voting record. Remember, it took 18 years for people to realize the disconnect between Jim Sasser's rhetoric and record, and that disconnect was arguably greater than Lincoln Davis'.

Based on their positions on immigration-control issues, we endorsed Janice Bowling, a Republican, in her challenge to U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis last year. Since then, Davis has become much more knowlegeable about what is really happening to our country and the things that must be done to control illegal immigration. His votes during the past year reflect his growing wisdom. Davis went onto Lou Dobbs's CNN show a few months ago and echoed what his constituents are demanding: immediate enforcment of our immigration laws, including control of our borders.

Unless Davis diverges from his fairly recent epiphany on these issues, I will support him in the next race.

As I've been saying, the Democrats will steal the thunder on this issue from the Republicans, most of whom have lounged around with lukewarm, halfhearted, or no, attempts to solve the problem.
